MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – In Michigan, the 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak has now been linked to two fatalities, marking the first confirmed deaths by the state. As of Aug. 3, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases. Additionally, 193 hospitalizations had been documented through July 30. Medical records indicated that both individuals suffered from serious underlying health issues, which may have been affected by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Authorities have stated they will not disclose further specifics regarding the two cases.

Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak.

Both patients fell ill prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths on Aug. 3, describing them as related to cyclosporiasis in individuals with pre-existing health conditions. The total case count in Michigan includes all reports during the investigation and remains subject to updates. Federal data generally encompasses laboratory-confirmed cases and may differ from state figures that include probable illnesses.

Federal authorities are also probing a nine-state outbreak of Cyclospora infections associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. As of July 24, nine states had identified 1,947 infected individuals, many of whom reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 patients required hospitalization according to federal records. The onset of illness ranged from June 22 through July 20. The CDC later acknowledged Michigan’s two fatalities, which had not been reflected in the detailed federal totals as of July 24.

Recall Includes Iceberg Lettuce from Central Mexico

Taylor Farms de Mexico has removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall targeted several food-service items and Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at specific Walmart locations. The products’ use-by dates spanned from July 18 through Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed affected lettuce to 27 states, primarily for food service. Taco Bell ceased using lettuce from this supplier on July 17.

Michigan officials have not confirmed a direct link between every reported case and the recalled iceberg lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to consider lettuce or salad greens as potential sources. Nevertheless, the state has yet to identify a specific product, grower, or supplier responsible for the entire outbreak. Officials also emphasize that other food items cannot be entirely excluded from the broader investigation. The federal outbreak tied to lettuce represents only part of the nationwide cyclosporiasis activity being monitored.

Symptoms May Persist Without Proper Treatment

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, leading to intestinal illness. Infection typically occurs after consuming contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms usually start about one week after exposure, though this can vary. If untreated, the illness may last over a month, with symptoms potentially subsiding only to return later.

Health officials recommend consumers discard any remaining recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the point of purchase. They should thoroughly clean containers and surfaces that touched the affected produce. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice, especially if they consumed iceberg lettuce in the past two weeks. Michigan continues to update the case numbers as health departments at the state and local levels investigate the outbreak.
