KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – In Nepal, the United Nations and partners are mobilizing a $49.6 million emergency appeal to respond to recent floods. Launched for a four-month period, this flash appeal is designed to support 84,270 individuals affected by the disaster that struck on August 26. This target includes 19,284 households across 17 municipalities in six districts. Nearly 40% of those prioritized are children. The focus of the response lies in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, and Tanahu. Nepalese authorities continue ongoing relief and recovery efforts in these impacted regions.

The catastrophe was triggered by a glacial collapse that unleashed a powerful surge of water, mud, and debris. Floodwaters inundated communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river basin and nearby areas. As of September 6, over 1,300 fatalities have been reported across Nepal, with nearly 5,000 individuals still missing as rescue operations persist. Responders have also searched through hydropower tunnels and settlements buried in mud. Some survivors have been located days after the floods occurred.
The floods caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, homes, schools, power infrastructure, and local water systems. In some mountain villages, access remains challenging due to destroyed or blocked transport links. The emergency appeal supports Nepal’s government-led efforts to address these issues. It provides for shelter, food, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and protection services. Additionally, aid efforts aim to restore electricity and support rural livelihoods. Preparing for winter is also incorporated into the four-month humanitarian strategy.
Plan Focuses on Critical Services
The appeal allocates resources for direct cash transfers where local markets are functional to assist families affected. Relief agencies can also distribute cold-weather shelter materials and portable solar devices. Support for water includes repairs, purification systems, and hygiene supplies. Healthcare initiatives cover emergency treatment and nutritional support. Protection services aim to assist children separated from their families. The plan also includes food aid and livestock assistance. These measures are designed to meet immediate needs across communities impacted by the floods in Nepal.
Access remains a significant obstacle in northern Nepal. Damaged roads and bridges have hampered relief efforts reaching upper Rasuwa, with some locations accessible only on foot. Recent assessments have identified 3,844 displaced individuals living across 34 sites in four areas. The report also indicates that 4,288 households are affected, including 2,886 displaced households. These figures highlight the ongoing need for shelter, water, food, and essential services as relief activities expand.
Humanitarian Supplies Arrive in Flood-Affected Areas
UNICEF received 84 metric tonnes of emergency supplies in Kathmandu on September 4, destined for distribution among affected communities. The shipment included water tanks, hygiene kits, water treatment equipment, diarrhoea treatment tools, tents, winter clothing, and educational supplies. Trucks then transported these relief items toward Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. The aid supports access to safe water, disease prevention, healthcare, and education for children and families impacted by the floods.
The $49.6 million appeal encompasses ten humanitarian sectors through the end of 2026. Food security accounts for approximately $7.94 million of the total funding. Water and sanitation needs require about $7.9 million, while health-related expenses are estimated at roughly $7.6 million. Logistics and emergency telecommunications need around $7.33 million, and shelter requirements total approximately $7.1 million. Collectively, these five sectors comprise the majority of the appeal, as Nepal continues its response to one of its most severe recent flood calamities.
