CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, marking its debut in the foldable smartphone market. The device, priced from $1,999 in the U.S., features a 7.6-inch internal display that unfolds, while a 5.4-inch outer screen handles typical phone functions when closed. Preorders will begin on October 16, with retail shops opening sales on October 23. This launch introduces a new form factor for Apple alongside its standard smartphone offerings.

The iPhone Duo employs Super Retina XDR screens on both sides, equipped with ProMotion and Always-On capabilities. Apple specifies a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits for each display. The inner panel’s nano-texture finish minimizes glare and makes the fold crease less noticeable, according to Apple. The device’s enclosure is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, and the sophisticated hinge consists of over 100 components. Additionally, Apple certifies the iPhone Duo with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
To ensure seamless operation in both open and closed states, Apple developed iOS 27.1. The new operating system introduces Split View, allowing users to run two apps side by side—a first for the iPhone. It also supports opening two windows of the same app and saving app pairs for future use. The inner display can show two Home Screen pages and a vertically scrolling Today View. Touch ID is embedded in the side button and functions regardless of whether the device is folded or unfolded.
Foldable Hardware Meets a Redesigned iOS Experience
Camera capabilities include a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main sensor also offers an optical-quality 2x telephoto zoom. The Duo Preview feature displays a live camera feed on the outer screen while taking photos. Selfies can be captured with the rear cameras while users view themselves on the outer display. The primary camera supports 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision.
Powering the iPhone Duo is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, manufactured using 2-nanometer process technology. The chip includes a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engines. It is paired with a vapor chamber and a battery on each side of the device. Apple estimates up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen, extending to 44 hours on the outer display, with mixed usage lasting up to 24 hours.
Pricing and Market Launch Scheduled for October
Available in star white and night sky, the iPhone Duo offers four storage options: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. In the U.S. the starting price is $1,999, while in the UAE, it begins at AED 8,499. Customers across more than 70 countries and regions can place preorders starting October 16. Apple aims for initial shipments on October 23, with an additional release in 28 countries and regions on October 30.
The introduction of the iPhone Duo positions Apple within the foldable smartphone segment, currently led by several major manufacturers. Its book-style design combines a traditional outer display with a larger, flexible interior workspace. Apple integrates this form factor with its proprietary processors, camera technology, and ecosystem services. The device is also designed to operate solely with an eSIM worldwide and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. The October 23 launch will see the first foldable iPhone in consumers’ hands roughly six weeks after its reveal.
