WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi convened at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the expansion of economic and energy partnership. The talks emphasized American investments, oil extraction, natural gas development, and electricity infrastructure projects. Trump stated the United States anticipated engaging in numerous commercial agreements with Iraq and highlighted that American companies would play a leading role in Iraqi oil initiatives. No final project values, commercial terms, or timelines were disclosed by either government following the discussions.

During his first official visit to Washington since assuming office in May, al-Zaidi led a high-ranking Iraqi delegation. Iraqi officials indicated that the visit addressed trade, investment, technology, transportation, and energy cooperation. Baghdad aims to involve more established American firms in key development projects and seeks collaboration in healthcare, education, and petroleum products. Officials described the meetings as part of a broader strategy to foster practical economic partnerships between Iraq and the United States.

Energy collaboration was a key component of the agenda. Iraq is seeking investment to increase crude oil production, develop natural gas resources, and enhance its electricity grid. The cabinet recently instructed the oil, electricity, and communications ministries to prioritize qualified U.S. companies. Additionally, Iraq’s North Oil Company signed an agreement with HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq, covering oil and gas development following technical and commercial negotiations between the company and Iraqi authorities.

Oil and Power Projects Dominate the Bilateral Agenda

Electricity cooperation was also prominently discussed. Iraq authorized its Electricity Ministry to finalize a broader cooperation agreement with GE Vernova, focusing on generation and transmission infrastructure. The company already supports several Iraqi power projects, including turbine upgrades and grid improvements. Past agreements have involved maintenance at power plants and measures to boost generation capacity. With ongoing demand increasing pressure on the national grid, Baghdad considers electricity supply a top public service priority.

Oil exports and increasing production capacity were also addressed during the economic discussions. Iraqi officials mentioned that energy agreements are aimed at expanding export options and raising production levels. Iraq primarily exports crude via Gulf shipping routes and relies heavily on petroleum revenue. The government has called for more integration between Iraqi oil fields and Mediterranean export markets. al-Zaidi reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to OPEC while emphasizing that the country deserves a fair share of production within the group.

US Investment Grows Across Iraq’s Energy Industry

Iraq, home to some of the world’s largest proven crude reserves and a founding member of OPEC, continues to face infrastructure limitations affecting production growth, which is also governed by the OPEC+ supply framework. Baghdad aims to expand capacity while adhering to its international commitments. Companies like HKN Energy, Chevron, and GE Vernova have been involved in Iraqi energy projects or discussions. Chevron has engaged in talks concerning West Qurna 2, one of Iraq’s largest oilfields, along with other potential developments.

The Washington talks also explored broader economic ties beyond oil and electricity. Trump and Al-Zaidi discussed opportunities related to trade, communications, technology, infrastructure, and private sector investments. Iraqi officials reported that the delegation included senior government officials responsible for economic and security issues. The two sides did not release a comprehensive list of signed commercial agreements post-meeting, but public statements confirmed that energy investment and overall economic cooperation remained central themes of the bilateral talks.
