The Central Bank of Egypt announced this provisional figure on September 7. At the close of July, reserves stood at $56.2939 billion, indicating a rise of approximately $920.6 million in August, or about 1.6%. This latest figure continues a trend of monthly increases in 2026, pushing Egypt’s official foreign reserves above the $57 billion mark for the first time.

Compared to August 2025, when reserves were $49.2507 billion, the August total shows a year-on-year growth of roughly 16.2%. At the end of December 2025, Egypt’s net international reserves amounted to $51.4516 billion. Since then, reserves have grown by nearly $5.76 billion, or 11.2%, over the first eight months of 2026. Data from official monthly reports reveal a steady rise in reserves every month since January, with gains continuing through August.
The momentum of reserve accumulation intensified during mid-2026. Reserves hit $53.1342 billion in May before climbing to $55.0723 billion in June. They then increased further to $56.2939 billion in July and ultimately to $57.2145 billion in August. The June expansion was approximately $1.94 billion over May, while July added about $1.22 billion. August contributed roughly $920.6 million. These three months collectively added over $4 billion to Egypt’s foreign reserve stockpile.
Continued high levels of foreign currency inflows
Remittances sent home by Egyptians working abroad also set a record high during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Central Bank of Egypt reported that inflows totaled around $47.3 billion for that period, marking a 29.6% increase from approximately $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. In June alone, remittances reached about $4.2 billion, which is 15.6% higher than the roughly $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025, according to official August data.
Egypt’s latest available balance of payments figures span from July to March of the 2025/2026 fiscal year. During this period, the overall balance registered a deficit of $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, the capital and financial account saw net inflows of $9.9 billion, and the current account recorded a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official overview of Egypt’s external financial position prior to the August reserve update.
Reserves hit successive monthly record highs
Throughout 2026, the reserve figures have surpassed previous nominal highs. Reserves were $52.5938 billion in January, then increased to $52.7455 billion in February. They reached $52.8306 billion in March, followed by $53.0092 billion in April, and $53.1342 billion in May. By June, reserves had exceeded $55 billion, climbing to $56 billion in July and ultimately hitting $57 billion in August. The August figure remains provisional, consistent with the latest monthly reserve reports.
Compared to the same period last year, Egypt’s August reserves are nearly $8 billion higher. The country has now posted three consecutive month-end totals above $55 billion. July marked the first time reserves exceeded $56 billion, and August marked the first above $57 billion. Since December 2025, reserve levels have grown by over 10%. The August data not only set a new record for Egypt’s net international reserves but also marked a continuous upward trend throughout 2026.
