MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in the United States attending the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting along with bilateral trade discussions. The event takes place in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal is also scheduled to meet with his U.S. counterpart during this visit. The talks will focus on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and aim to finalize an interim trade agreement based on the joint framework set for February 2026.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 gathering, which brings together trade ministers from member nations. The agenda includes issues such as forced labour in global supply chains and structural excess production capacity. The ministers will also discuss the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions related to food. Throughout both days, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has scheduled ministerial sessions, along with meetings and industry events in Milwaukee.
India stated its intention to promote an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system centered around the World Trade Organization. The government emphasized the importance of maintaining policy flexibility for developing economies. Goyal plans to hold bilateral meetings with other participating ministers on the sidelines of the event. These engagements are expected to explore opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and other enterprises involved in both domestic and international trade.
Focus returns to trade agreement negotiations
The India-U.S. trade talks build upon a joint framework announced in February for an interim agreement aimed at reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. This framework reaffirmed ongoing negotiations for a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement and outlined commitments on tariffs and market access for industrial goods and various agricultural products. It also included discussions on medical devices, information and communications technology, standards, and supply-chain cooperation. Both nations continue working toward finalizing the interim agreement within the scope of these broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s U.S. itinerary spans from September 29 to October 5, encompassing activities beyond the G20 meetings. He plans to meet with business leaders and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago, representing sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail, and technology. The schedule features roundtable discussions with startups and other companies. In Chicago, the minister will also meet professional associations representing the Indian community and participate in scheduled commemorative events during his stay.
G20 agenda covers supply chains and capacity issues
The Milwaukee program includes a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity on September 30. G20 ministers are also scheduled to tour a Rockwell Automation facility before the official opening session later that day. Additional ministerial meetings are planned for October 1. The United States, holding the G20 presidency in 2026, has identified key discussion topics including forced labour, excess capacity, food trade, and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle.
India and the United States began negotiations for a broader bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The framework set in February 2026 maintains those talks while establishing the foundation for an interim arrangement. Goyal’s meetings in Milwaukee are part of this ongoing process, focusing on advancing the bilateral agreement and completing the interim deal outlined in the joint framework. The G20 activities will run through October 1, while Goyal’s broader U.S. visit continues until October 5.
